High school, love, and the power of acceptance take center stage in Albuquerque Little Theatre's (ALT) production of The Prom, a high-energy and heartwarming musical based on the 2018 Broadway hit. In collaboration with Devon Frieder Productions, this co-production delivers a dazzling, laugh-out-loud, and emotional show that celebrates the joy of being true to yourself while highlighting the challenges of fighting for inclusion.

For those unfamiliar with the story, The Prom follows four eccentric Broadway actors whose latest show has flopped, leaving them desperate for a cause to reinvigorate their public image. Enter Emma, a small-town Indiana teenager who wants to take her girlfriend to prom—only to be met with resistance from her school's PTA. Sensing an opportunity to do some good (and reclaim the spotlight), the self-absorbed but well-meaning performers descend upon Emma's town to help. But their over-the-top activism doesn't quite go as planned. What follows is a rollercoaster of comedy, heartfelt moments, and show-stopping musical numbers that ultimately lead to a powerful message about love, acceptance, and the power of community.

The cast is thoughtfully assembled. Each performer bringing depth, charisma, and powerhouse vocals to their roles.

Laurie Finnegan's portrayal of Dee Dee Allen is a masterclass in comedic timing and vocal prowess. Her belt is so powerful it could be heard from here to New York, and her ability to command the stage makes every moment she's on it a joy to watch.

Nicholas Handley is a gem as Barry, balancing fierce flamboyance with a heart of gold. With every sway and swish, he had the audience locked in - delivering both humor and deeply touching moments.

Wendy Barker continues to impress with her theatrical range. As Angie Dickinson, Barker embodies the quintessential Broadway chorus girl destined for stardom. Her charm, grace, and effortless stage presence make her performance captivating.

Ron Gallegos shines as Trent Oliver, stepping into a role made famous by Andrew Rannells on Broadway. He holds his own with the rest of the quartet as the self-important yet lovable performer, often serving as the voice of acceptance and reason (when he's not reminding everyone that he went to Juilliard).

Rob Armstrong Martin is the principal every kid wishes they had. As Mr. Hawkins, his kindness radiates from his performance. His heartfelt delivery makes his character's bond with Emma all the more touching.

Jillian Foster is the ultimate Karen as Mrs. Greene, Alyssa's overbearing and change-resistant mother. She masterfully captures the essence of a woman clinging to control—only to be confronted with the emotional cost of her rigidity. Her character arc is compelling, and her eventual growth is executed beautifully.

Speaking of Alyssa Greene—Arwyn Vernold delivers a perfect portrayal of the girl next door who seemingly has it all but is secretly struggling. Her vulnerability during "Alyssa Greene" was clear, leaving many audience members teary.

Last but certainly not least, Devon Frieder is nothing short of a revelation. Truly a "triple-threat," Frieder co-produced the musical and stars as Emma, gunning for the title of New Mexico's female Lin-Manuel Miranda. With a twinkle in her eye and infectious energy, she effortlessly carries the show.

One of the biggest highlights of The Prom is its electric choreography—also done by Frieder—which blends Broadway-style flair with youthful exuberance. The ensemble numbers, in particular, capture the excitement and energy of a high school prom while keeping the movement sharp, synchronized, and visually dynamic. "The Acceptance Song" is one of the funniest numbers in the show, blending its outrageous lyrics with lively choreography. The over-the-top execution makes it a true standout, leaving the audience in stitches. While the final number, "It’s Time to Dance," is a full-fledged celebration that makes you want to leap out of your seat and join in. The combination of vibrant movement and joyful storytelling is simply infectious.

Under the musical direction of Alex Harden, the production's musical numbers are beautifully executed. Composed by Matthew Sklar with lyrics by Chad Beguelin, the songs range from upbeat anthems to tender ballads, and this cast delivers them with heart and precision. From the hilarious "It's Not About Me" to the deeply emotional "Unruly Heart" — which never fails to swell the heart. Every song is passionately performed. The harmonies among the cast are breathtaking, seamlessly blending to elevate the show's emotional impact.

The set design perfectly captures the glitz of Broadway and the charm of small-town Edgewater, Indiana. Clever lighting transitions transport the audience between locations effortlessly, while the costuming strikes the right contrast between the Broadway stars' flamboyance and the town's more conservative aesthetic.

The attention to detail in the visual elements enhances the production's humor, energy, and emotional depth, making for a fully immersive experience.

Beyond its humor and dazzling performances, The Prom carries a message that is more relevant than ever. At a time when understanding and acceptance are desperately needed, this production fills that space with heart, humor, and hope. It's a story that resonates—reminding us of the importance of standing up for what's right while celebrating love in all its forms. Whether you come for the humor, the powerhouse performances, or the infectious music, this production offers something for everyone. You'll leave the theater with a smile and an important message in your heart.

Albuquerque Little Theatre's The Prom is a must-see event, bringing Broadway-level talent and heartfelt storytelling to the local stage. Don't miss your chance to experience this vibrant, moving, and downright hilarious show. Grab your tickets now at albuquerquelittletheatre.org
