Día de Muertos, a cherished tradition celebrated by many, resonates deeply with anyone who values the love of family. This Sunday, Popejoy Hall will host Sugar Skull! A Día de Muertos Musical Adventure, a captivating bilingual and bicultural musical designed for young audiences and families. The production beautifully weaves traditional regional music and dance from Mexico into the enchanting story of twelve-year-old Vita Flores.

In this musical, Vita is puzzled by her family's enthusiasm for celebrating deceased loved ones. Her perspective shifts dramatically when a lively candy skeleton springs to life, whisking her away on a magical, musical journey to uncover the true essence of Día de Muertos.

Iker Paredes takes on the role of Sugar Skull, a charming skeleton with secrets to share. Alongside Vita, he dances with ancient ancestors, sings with a sorrowful sorceress, outwits the mischievous Chaneques, and even encounters the iconic Catrina Calavera. But can Vita piece together the elements needed for her family's ofrenda in time?

Paredes, a proud Mexican, is thrilled to join this remarkable ensemble and share its powerful message. "When I first learned about the show, I knew I had to be part of it because of its deep connection to traditions close to my heart. Día de Muertos is a Mexican tradition, but it's incredible to see how many cultures worldwide have their own ways of honoring ancestors. It's truly amazing!"

The creative team, led by Gregory Van Acker and Sinuhé Padilla, has crafted a vibrant 65-minute production featuring three musicians, two dancers, and three actors. Tailored for audiences aged 6-10, the show promises a visually stunning experience. Paredes has enjoyed every moment with the talented cast. "As the new Sugar Skull, I felt so welcomed. The cast has been amazing, and I appreciate their warmth and talent."

Paredes hopes audiences leave with hearts full of love and appreciation for family. "Visually, the show is breathtaking—the costumes, music, and scenery are all incredible. But, the most important message is about family remembrance and cultural identity. If you see the show, you'll find something that touches your heart."
