Angelique Midthunder, Casting Director and Owner of Midthunder Casting has established herself as a pivotal figure in New Mexico's thriving film industry. Known for her sharp eye for talent and commitment to fostering local talent, Midthunder's journey from an accidental actor to an accomplished casting director is a story of serendipity and determination.

Her entry into the film world was unconventional. In the 1990s, while browsing a Santa Fe newspaper, she stumbled upon an ad seeking someone who rode a horse. Believing it was a ranch job, she attended the casting call only to find herself reading lines and landing the part. "I thought it was a job at a ranch or racetrack," she recalls. "I had no idea I was auditioning for a film." Though acting wasn't her ultimate passion, this experience introduced her to the industry and a casting director who eventually offered her an assistant position. Working under mentors like Joe Edna Bolden, Midthunder honed her skills and eventually struck out on her own in Los Angeles before returning to New Mexico in 2005, drawn by the state's burgeoning film incentives.

What sets Midthunder apart is her dedication to the artistry of casting. "I love working with filmmakers, reading scripts, and envisioning how each character comes to life," she says. For her, casting is far more than finding a look. It's about uncovering the "magic" actors bring to roles. "It's that magic that happens when you find the right person for the right role. It's like lightning striking," she adds.

Her recent work on Netflix's Rez Ball, directed by Sydney Freeland, exemplifies this ethos. The film, centered on a Navajo high school basketball team, demanded extensive scouting to find actors who could authentically portray the characters. Despite the challenges of casting during the pandemic, Midthunder and her team reviewed over 5,000 auditions from across North America. Emphasizing Navajo representation, they selected many local talents, including four cast members from New Mexico. "We prioritized Navajo talent to honor the story's authenticity," she explains. The process involved innovative methods, including digital auditions due to COVID-19 restrictions. "We asked players to submit videos of themselves shooting three-pointers, driving the ball, and doing layups," she shares. "It was an intense but rewarding process."

Midthunder's commitment to community and inclusivity extends beyond individual projects. She describes New Mexico's film industry as a "family" and credits its supportive environment for fostering lifelong friendships and collaborations. "It doesn't matter if three or five years go by," she says. "When I see people on set, it's like no time has passed." Her return to the state was motivated by this camaraderie, coupled with the unique charm of the "Land of Enchantment."

The entertainment industry is truly a family affair for Midthunder. Her husband, David Midthunder, is a successful actor known for his work in films and television, including Westworld, and 1883. Their daughter, Amber Midthunder, is a rising star with notable roles in projects such as Prey and Legion. Angelique often reflects on the shared passion for storytelling within her family. "It's amazing to see how each of us brings something different to the table," she says. "Amber's journey as an actor and David's experience on screen enrich our discussions about the craft and the industry. We're all learning from each other." The Midthunders' cinematic contributions highlight the wealth of talent and dedication.

When advising aspiring actors, Midthunder emphasizes perseverance. "Don’t give up if it's your dream," she says. "Whether it's a student film or an independent project, keep honing your craft. Answer those casting calls because that's where we discover so much talent." She highlights that many Rez Ball actors had no prior acting experience, but were found through open casting calls on platforms like Instagram and Facebook. "If it's your passion, keep going," she urges.

With an impressive portfolio spanning independent films to major productions, Midthunder remains a beacon of inspiration in the casting world. Her work continues to elevate New Mexico as a hub for authentic storytelling and diverse talent. As the film industry evolves, Angelique Midthunder's influence ensures that unique voices and stories remain at the forefront.
